FOREST MAIDEN – DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENINGS

produced during field research in Maramureș

This summer, we followed the trail of the Forest Maiden, speaking with people who recall as if it was yesterday, not only the tales heard from family or neighbors, but also their own lived encounters. We spoke with those who heard her whispering, her voice resounding so powerfully it made the mountains tremble, singing without echo, calling them in the dead of night with a sweet, alluring voice to which some naïve souls responded only to regret it deeply. Men and women stumbled on her footsteps and wandered for nights through distant villages. To others she appeared taking familiar faces from family or neighbors to lure them in. We ventured into the mountains seeking the famed Forest Maiden’s garden, with medicinal plants meticulously arranged, and heard of her years-long romantic affair with a shepherd from Moisei.

We invite you to watch the documentary films created during the field research in Groșii Țibleșului, Lăpuș, Larga, Cupșeni, Breb, Botiza, Moisei, along with interviews with ethnologists from Baia Mare and Sibiu who have also studied the story of the Forest Maiden and the cultural phenomenon woven around her with great interest.
